Project Managers are often legitimately adept at large-scale organization and driving tasks to completion as it relates to technical or task-related phenomena within their respective projects. However, project managers tend to reveal off-the-record that relationships within those projects/tasks are often quite difficult and outside the scope of both their training and ability, the great irony being that it is precisely within these difficult relationships that the majority of project-interrupting personnel problems take place. This is especially true given that conversations required to repair relational difficulties require some degree nuance, understanding, and balance.

This presentation aims to help listeners:

  • Understand layers of workplace (and other) conversations using therapeutic conversation as a framework
  • Identify situations which call for attendance to one layer of conversation vs another, or both
  • Grasp relational difficulties that outflow from a failure to attend properly to a particular conversational layer, as well as political, organizational, or cultural barriers that may reinforce tendencies to ignore conversational layers
  • Implement strategies to enable an adept, contextually rich approach to workplace (and other) conversations, leading to change-producing interventions for “stuck” employees and situations (and therefore, projects!).
