Morning Session – Project Management 101 for Nonprofits

 

Who This Course Is For:

This free course is designed specifically for individuals working in non-profit organizations who are not formally trained in project management and do not hold a PMP® certification. Whether you're managing events, coordinating volunteers, or launching community initiatives, this course will equip you with practical, easy-to-understand project management skills to help you succeed—no prior experience required.

Note: If you're already a certified project manager or have formal training, this course may not be the right fit but feel free to share it with colleagues who could benefit!

A hands-on, interactive training covering core PM concepts in nonprofit-friendly
terms:

  1. Introduction to PM in Nonprofits (30 mins)
  • Why PM matters for nonprofits (efficiency, donor trust, mission
    success).
  • Differences between nonprofit and corporate projects.
  1. Key PM Principles (90 mins, with group activities)
  • Scope: Defining project goals and deliverables (avoiding "scope
    creep").
  • Time: Simple scheduling tools (Gantt charts, task lists).
  • Budget: Cost estimation, resource allocation, and grant compliance.
  • Stakeholder Management: Engaging donors, volunteers, and
  • Risk Management: Identifying and mitigating common nonprofit risks.

Activity: Small groups discuss a sample nonprofit project (e.g.,
organizing a fundraiser) and identify scope/time/budget factors.

Lunch & Networking

  • Structured networking: Assign discussion topics (e.g., "Share a project
    success or challenge").
  • Optional: PM volunteers host tables for Q&A.

Afternoon Session – Breakout Workshops
“Bring Your Challenge” Collaborative Problem-Solving

1. Pitch & Group Formation (30 mins)

  • Nonprofit reps briefly present real project challenges (e.g., "How to manage volunteer turnover?").
  • Attendees split into small groups based on intere

2. Workshop Time (90 mins)

  • Groups brainstorm solutions using PM frameworks (e.g., SWOT analysis, stakeholder maps).
  • PM volunteers guide discussions and share best practices

3. Share-Out & Takeaways (45 mins)

  • Each group summarizes solutions in a 5-minute pitch.
  • Facilitator highlights recurring themes and PM lessons

Closing & Next Steps

  • Recap key learnings.
  • Share free PM resources (templates, toolkits).
  • Call to action: Encourage ongoing mentorship between PMs and nonprofits
