Name: Dan Jackson, IT PMO PM2 for Enterprise Mobility

Background & Motivation

1. What inspired you to volunteer with PMI St. Louis Chapter? In 2022, I made a deliberate decision to focus more of my time on mentoring. When I saw the Director of Mentoring position open at PMI St. Louis, I knew it was a great fit. The chance to relaunch the chapter’s Speed Mentoring program and build new ways to support members was something I didn’t want to pass up.

2. How long have you been a member and volunteer for PMI MSL? I’ve been a PMI member since 2008, first with the Baton Rouge chapter. After moving to St. Louis, I joined PMI MSL in 2023. I began volunteering in 2025 when I took on the Director of Mentoring role.

3. What roles have you served in as a volunteer? I’m serving as the Director of Mentoring for PMI MSL.

Impact & Experience

1. What has been your most memorable volunteer experience with PMI MSL? My most memorable experience has been relaunching the Speed Mentoring event in September 2025. We had around 30 professionals attend, and the energy in the room was incredible. Seeing members connect, share ideas, and learn from each other made all the work behind the scenes worthwhile.

2. How has volunteering impacted your personal or professional growth? Volunteering has given me the chance to grow as a leader outside of my day job. It’s helped me strengthen my ability to build community, engage with members, and create programs that provide value. It’s also expanded my network and given me fresh perspectives from professionals across different industries.

3. What skills have you gained or strengthened through your volunteer work? I’ve strengthened my skills in facilitation, member engagement, and event planning. It has also reinforced adaptability by listening to what members need and adjusting quickly to deliver programs that meet those needs.

Community & Advice

1. What do you enjoy most about being part of the PMI MSL volunteer community? I enjoy the sense of connection. Everyone is here because they want to learn, grow, and support others. Being surrounded by people who are passionate about project management and willing to share their time and experience creates a very motivating environment.

2. What advice would you give someone considering volunteering with PMI MSL? Start by identifying what you enjoy most, whether that is event planning, reaching out to speakers, or something else, and then find a way to contribute in that area. You don’t have to take on a big role right away. Starting small is a great way to make an impact and get connected.

3. How do you balance volunteering with other personal and professional commitments? It starts with having a supportive family. They understand that being part of this community helps me feel fulfilled in my professional life, which makes it easier to make time for volunteering. I also set clear expectations for myself so I can give meaningful time to the chapter without overcommitting.
