Background & Motivation1. What inspired you to volunteer with PMI St. Louis Chapter? I spent over 15 years as a scientist, and realized a few years ago that I was managing projects as a PM when a mentor pointed it out. Many aspiring project managers in STEM lack formal training and mentorship. I hope to one day mentor young scientists, helping them develop the mindset and skills needed to succeed as project managers.

2. How has volunteering impacted your personal or professional growth? Volunteering in this role has helped me by strengthening my expertise in governance, compliance and process improvement while sharpening my ability to influence without authority and align policies with goals that are strategic. I am also able to expand my network, build professional relationships and grow my credibility as an accountable leader. Most importantly, I feel satisfied as I am giving back to the PM community while developing myself as a leader.
3. What skills have you gained or strengthened through your volunteer work? I feel I have gained skills like policy development, review and implementation. Governance and compliance oversight. Strategic alignment of processes with organizational goals and written communication.
Community & Advice
1. What do you enjoy most about being part of the PMI MSL volunteer community? The PMI MSL volunteer community has a strong sense of connection, fostering growth on professional development and making a big impact on the community. This focus of the chapter is my favorite as I get to learn, grow and give back. What makes it more joyful is that we not only grow together but also focus on building relationships. I value opportunities to be part of this growth, exchange ideas and collaborate across industries. No matter what industry you come from, we speak the same Project Management language.
2. What advice would you give someone considering volunteering with PMI MSL? I would invite volunteers to come with an open mind, be proactive and be flexible. This is also an opportunity for you to learn and gain new perspectives. You don’t have to wait to be asked, try to share your ideas and step in where you see there is a need and you can add value.
3. How do you balance volunteering with other personal and professional commitments? Balancing my volunteer role with personal and professional commitments needs time management and priority. I dedicate a day and time for volunteer commitments so I can contribute in a meaningful way.
